Are you living, working or travelling in Serbia and running out of your regular psychiatric medication?

Finding an English-speaking psychiatrist in another country can be difficult, especially when you already have an established diagnosis and simply need continuation of your existing treatment.

Dr Milan Popović provides private psychiatric consultations in English for expats, foreign residents, digital nomads, international students, business travellers and visitors currently staying in Serbia.

For patients who already use prescribed psychiatric medication and have appropriate medical documentation, a psychiatric medication review in Serbia can usually be completed quickly and efficiently.

In straightforward cases, the consultation and possible prescription issuance usually take approximately 10 minutes.

A prescription may be issued only after a professional psychiatric assessment and only when continuation of treatment is medically indicated, clinically safe and legally appropriate.

Prescription issuance is not automatic or guaranteed.

Who Is This Service For?

This service is intended for adult patients who:

  • are currently staying in Serbia;
  • already use psychiatric medication prescribed by a licensed doctor;
  • have an established diagnosis or previous psychiatric report;
  • are clinically stable on their current treatment;
  • need continuation of regular psychiatric medication;
  • require a consultation in English;
  • can provide appropriate medical documentation;
  • need a private Serbian prescription for medication available in Serbia.

The service may be particularly useful for:

  • expats living in Belgrade or elsewhere in Serbia;
  • foreign employees working in Serbia;
  • digital nomads;
  • international students;
  • business travellers;
  • tourists staying in Serbia longer than expected;
  • patients who have recently moved to Serbia;
  • foreign residents who need continuity of psychiatric treatment.

This is not a medication-ordering service. The purpose of the consultation is to confirm that continuation of the existing treatment is safe and professionally justified.

A Fast 10-Minute Psychiatric Medication Review

When the patient has clear medical documentation and is already stable on an established treatment plan, the consultation is usually brief.

The standard psychiatric medication review usually takes approximately 10 minutes.

During the consultation, Dr Milan Popović will:

  • confirm your identity;
  • review your current symptoms;
  • examine your existing medical documentation;
  • confirm the medication name and dosage;
  • review how long you have been taking the medication;
  • assess treatment effectiveness;
  • ask about possible side effects;
  • review other medication and supplements;
  • check for relevant contraindications and interactions;
  • determine whether continuation of treatment is medically appropriate.

When the documentation is complete and there are no medical or legal reasons to refuse treatment continuation, a private prescription may be issued during or shortly after the consultation.

A longer psychiatric assessment may be required when the diagnosis, treatment history or current clinical condition is unclear.

Which Medications May Be Reviewed?

The service may include review and possible continuation of standard non-stimulant psychiatric medication.

This may include:

  • antidepressants;
  • mood stabilisers;
  • antipsychotic medication;
  • selected anxiolytic medication;
  • other appropriate non-stimulant psychiatric medication.

Every prescribing decision is individual.

The psychiatrist will consider:

  • the patient’s diagnosis;
  • previous treatment;
  • current symptoms;
  • medication dosage;
  • duration of treatment;
  • effectiveness;
  • adverse effects;
  • physical health;
  • medication interactions;
  • available medical documentation.

Previous use of a medication does not automatically mean that the same medication will be prescribed again.

ADHD and Stimulant Medication Are Not Included

Dr Milan Popović does not provide:

  • ADHD assessment;
  • ADHD diagnosis;
  • ADHD treatment;
  • stimulant medication;
  • stimulant prescription renewal;
  • methylphenidate prescriptions;
  • amphetamine-based medication;
  • continuation of stimulant treatment prescribed in another country.

Patients seeking ADHD treatment or stimulant medication should contact a specialist service that specifically provides ADHD assessment and management.

This exclusion applies even when the patient already has an ADHD diagnosis or an existing foreign prescription.

Medication Requiring a Special Prescription

Medication requiring a special, duplicate or double-prescription procedure in Serbia is not prescribed through this service.

This includes medication subject to a special controlled-prescription regime.

Such medication is not included in:

  • the standard consultation;
  • the urgent same-day consultation;
  • the comprehensive psychiatric assessment.

The fact that a medication was previously prescribed in another country does not guarantee that it can be prescribed in Serbia.

Selected anxiolytic medication may be considered only when it is medically appropriate and does not require a special prescribing procedure.

What Documents Should You Provide?

Before the appointment, please send as much relevant documentation as possible.

Useful documents include:

  • a recent psychiatric report;
  • a previous prescription;
  • a discharge summary;
  • a letter from your psychiatrist;
  • a report from your general practitioner;
  • a current treatment plan;
  • a photograph of the original medication package;
  • laboratory results, when relevant;
  • a list of all medication and supplements you currently use.

Please provide the generic or active ingredient name whenever possible.

Medication brand names often differ between countries. A medicine sold under one brand name in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, France or another country may have a different commercial name in Serbia.

Medical documentation may usually be submitted in English or Serbian.

A translation may be required when the information in the document cannot be clearly understood.

No.

  • the psychiatrist’s professional time;
  • psychiatric assessment;
  • review of medical documentation;
  • evaluation of current treatment;
  • medication safety assessment;
  • professional treatment recommendations.

It does not represent payment for a guaranteed prescription.

A prescription may be issued only when the psychiatrist determines that:

  • there are no significant contraindications;
  • there are no unacceptable medication interactions;

A prescription may not be issued when:

  • the requested medication is a stimulant;
  • the request concerns ADHD treatment;

The consultation fee remains payable even when a prescription cannot be issued.

An online consultation may also be considered when clinically appropriate.

However, an in-person appointment may be required when:

  • the medical documentation is insufficient;
  • the patient’s identity cannot be adequately verified;
  • the current mental state cannot be reliably assessed online;
  • there are significant safety concerns;
  • additional medical evaluation is necessary;
  • the medication cannot appropriately be reviewed remotely.

The most appropriate consultation format is determined individually.

Medication Availability in Serbia

Not every medication available abroad is also available in Serbia.

Even when the same active ingredient is available, there may be differences in:

  • brand name;
  • manufacturer;
  • tablet strength;
  • pharmaceutical form;
  • package size;
  • prescription requirements;
  • pharmacy availability.

A locally available equivalent may sometimes be considered when medically appropriate.

The availability of a particular medication or brand cannot be guaranteed before the consultation.
